Operation Appliance AidSM Provides Air Conditioning Unit to Local Veteran
Cross Country Home Services and United Way of Broward County join forces to help veterans with appliance needs.
TAMARAC, FL – (August 31, 2012) – Today United Way of Broward County and Cross Country Home Services (CCHS) announce the second recipient to benefit from the "OPERATION APPLIANCE AIDSM: Keeping things running smoothly for our veterans" program. Seventy-five year old retired National Guardsman Arnold Merl received a much-needed air conditioning unit on behalf of the program at his home in Tamarac.
Merl is a cancer survivor who also suffers from Crohn's Disease, Diabetes, severe arthritis, hypertension as well as Degenerative Disc Disease. A Broward County resident for more than 20 years, Merl currently lives with his wife and two adult children in their Tamarac home. Although Arnold and his wife Sharon have enough to get by on Social Security and occasional financial assistance from their daughters, their air conditioner is just too old to fix and they simply can't afford a new unit. Due to their financial hardships, the Merls filed for bankruptcy in 2010.
"We have been without heating and cooling since December," said Arnold. "Living in the heat and humidity of South Florida has certainly taken its toll on us."
In partnership with United Way of Broward County, CCHS, one of the country's leading home warranty companies launched OPERATION APPLIANCE AID on July 3, 2012. Through this program, CCHS will donate more than $30,000 worth of new appliances and home systems to veteran and military service families in need throughout Broward County over the next year.

OPERATION APPLIANCE AID is a program of United Way of Broward County's MISSION UNITED initiative supporting Broward's military and their families. CCHS is part of the MISSION UNITED Advisory Committee which helps unite the community in support of veterans and military families to fill gaps in needed services. The committee has identified three major unmet needs among veterans including housing/financial, legal and employment assistance. The committee is currently working to secure resources for veterans and military families and to get the message of support out to the community.
