Keep Your Cool – Air Conditioning System Maintenance For Homeowners
Home air conditioning systems can easily be taken for granted, and often go without maintenance for months or even years. Without proper maintenance a breakdown might occur in mid-July without any forewarning and you’ll be stuck in the sweltering heat. Breakdowns can happen to anyone, but your chances of disaster are lower if you’re a homeowner who gets regular maintenance checkups. Here are a few tips to extend the life of your home air conditioning system.
1. Schedule annual maintenance with a service professional to inspect and clean your system. If you can schedule maintenance before summer arrives you may get a lower rate.
2. Check to ensure there are no plants, weeds or tall grasses obstructing the unit. Clear the area around the unit to allow the machine to work efficiently and effectively.
3. Test the air coming out of your air conditioner with an infrared thermometer. The air should be between 15-20 degrees cooler than room temperature. If it is not, there may be a mechanical problem and you will want to schedule an appointment with a service professional.
4. In between your annual maintenance, vacuum air conditioning filters then rinse with water to get a good clean. Every few years replace filters completely to keep the air quality in your home clean and protected.
