Sizzling Summer Home Maintenance Tips

High temperatures can take a toll on your home appliances and outdoor areas. Beat the heat this summer with these preventive tips to avoid meltdowns and malfunctions:

Air Conditioner: Vacuum out the ducts and clean or replace your filter to remove dust and build-up. Check any hoses and rubber seals for leaks. Keep the area around the coils free of debris. Schedule an HVAC maintenance call for additional checks.

Outdoor Decks and Surfaces: Heat can warp wood and cause melting and cracks in asphalt. Repair and reseal wood and fill any holes or cracks to prevent stumbles and injuries. Check for any wasp or hornet nests that may be hiding in the dark corners under a roof or deck.

Grills and Barbecue Areas: Inspect and clean any outdoor grills or barbecue areas thoroughly before firing up for the summer. Refill an empty propane tank or buy a fresh one, and check for any leaks or fissures in the gas lines. Be sure to store protective covers for your equipment in a clean and dry area for use again in fall.

Lawn Care: Check your lawnmower and weed trimmer and schedule any necessary maintenance. Inspect sprinkler heads to be sure water is flowing properly and use weed killer to control any of the unsightly greens that flourish under the summer sun.

Swimming Pools and Hot Tubs: Some easy weekly maintenance can keep your pool or spa sparkling and inviting. Clean out the filter and any vents or jets to be sure they are free of debris. Vacuum the pool and brush down the tile or vinyl siding. Check the chemicals with a test kit and add any necessary chlorine, soda ash or muriatic acid.
